In the newly published Webometrics Ranking of World Universities 2015, the Jagiellonian University took first place in Poland. Among over 20 thousand academic institutions from all over the world that were included in the analysis our university was ranked 285th, which means it has moved up two places since the last ranking. Four other Polish higher education institutions are listed in the prestigious top 500: the University of Warsaw (309th), the AGH University of Science and Technology (388th), Warsaw University of Technology (461st), and the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan (499th).

As in previous editions, the list is topped by American institutions: Harvard University (1st position), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2nd place) and Stanford University (3rd place).

The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is published twice a year by the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas). The analysis focuses on the universities' communication via the Internet and does not take into account their research achievements per se.

The universities are ranked on the basis of such criteria as: impact, that is how often other websites redirect users to the website of a given university, presence, that is the number of pages within the institution's domain, openness: the number of documents (e.g doc, pdf) published on the website, as well as excellence, which includes the institution's part in the most frequently cited research publications. The methodology may be changed from edition to edition.
