A doctoral student from the Jagiellonian University Institute of Religious Studies won the “Diamond Grant” for his research project devoted to rock art in Kondoa region in Central Tanzania from the archaeological and ethnological perspective. 26-year-old Maciej Grzelczyk discovered rock paintings in Swaga Swaga Game Reserve.

JU archaeologists continue their project in Israel

During the first three weeks of July, a group of researchers from the JU Institute of Archaeology worked at the dig site in Tel Erani in Israel. One of the most astonishing discoveries of this season are the remains of a gigantic defensive wall which are more than 5,000 years old, suggesting that the cities of Southern Levant might have been built before the Egyptians colonised them.

For the first time, scientists have been able to pinpoint a source of neutrinos outside of our galaxy. The extremely light and nigh-invisible elementary particle spotted by scientists has originated in the TXS0506+56 galaxy – a blazar – as evidenced by gamma ray observations.

The National Science Centre has announced the results of the second edition of the UWERTURA competition for internships in international teams funded by the European Research Council grants. Two JU scientists, Dr Błażej Nikiel-Wroczyński from the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science and Dr Piotr Micek from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, have won the chance to take part in such an internship.

JU students prove to be the best among Polish teams in the International Mathematics Competition

On 22–28 July, the 25th edition of the International Mathematics Competition for University Students (IMC), organised by the University College London and the American University in Bulgaria, took place in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. The event attracted 351 competitors from 110 higher education institutions. JU students have achieved the best results out of all Polish teams.

JU MC students will pay less for city bikes

JU MC students will pay less for city bikes

Thanks to an agreement between the city bike service Wavelo and the Jagiellonian University Medical College, students of medical programmes will be able to take advantage of the public bike sharing system in Kraków with a significant discount: instead of 0.16 PLN per minute, they will pay 0.06 PLN for the same amount of time. The pilot scheme will start on Wednesday.
