The Jagiellonian University has taken first place among Polish institutions in the European Patent Office ranking of most patent applications by country. In 2022, the number of applications from Poland has risen by 17.8%; what is more, nine out of ten most active institutions can be classified as either universities or research centres.
According to the report published on 28 March by the European Patent Office (EPO), the number of applications submitted by Polish businesses, universities and research centres has risen to 615 in 2022 from 522 in 2021. In terms of growth speed, this places Poland at the second place amongst the EPO member states (after Malta). Unfortunately, when it comes to successful registration of patents, the performance of Polish institutions has dropped by 21.7% (188 in 2022, 240 in 2021).
Out of he ten most active Polish institutions, nine are universities or research centres. The Jagiellonian University has returned to the top of the ranking with a total of 20 applications. Last year, it was overtaken by the Silesian University of Technology, which now took second place together with AGH University of Technology (18 applications). The University of Warsaw follows closely behind with 13 applications. The only business featured in the ranking, Polpharma, took fifth place with 11 applications).
The three leading areas in which Polish institutions are applying for patents are medical technologies (55), pharmaceutical products (40) and transport (39). The most dynamic growth can be observed in the case of biotechnology (+362.5%, 37 applications).
