The Rising Star Awards are conferred by the United European Gastroenterology (UEG) upon the most distinguished young researchers and clinicians. This year’s winners include Prof. Marcin Magierowski from the Chair in Physiology of the Jagiellonian University Medical College.
The Rising Star Award is presented to the most promising emerging scientists, based on the international quality research and developing scientific independence. Prof. Magierowski has been the second Polish researcher to receive this prestigious award during the last eight years. In 2016, the prize was awarded to Prof. Jakub Fichna from the Medical University of Lodz.
This year's awards will be officially presented during the United European Gastroenterology Week, to be held on 12-15 October 2024 in Vienna.
The research carried out by Prof. Marcin Magierowski and his Gaseous Mediators and Experimental Gastroenterology Lab focus on physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology of gastrointestinal tract and on gastrointestinal disorders. The research group is especially interested in the possible implementation of endogenous gaseous mediators-releasing compounds into the GI pharmacology. The results of their research have been published in top journals in the fields of biochemistry and molecular biology, pharmacology, and gastroenterology, included in the first decile of the JCR (Journal Citation Reports) database.
Prof. Magierowski (born 1987) graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy and obtained a PhD degree from the Faculty of Medicine of the JU Medical College. During his research career he has won a number of scholarships and awards, including distinctions from the American Gastroenterological Association, and has presented his papers at a number of conferences in the United States, Canada, and Europe. He has conducted research at a number of institutions in different countries, such as the McMaster University in Canada, Newcastle University in the UK, and the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam (the Netherlands). He is currently the head of the Cellular Engineering and Isotope Diagnostics Laboratory at the JU MC Chair in Physiology.
Prof. Magierowski is the member of several Polish and international scientific societies, including the American Chemical Society and the Society for Redox Biology and Medicine.
