World Copernican Congress

The World Copernican Congress is organised to mark the 550th anniversary of the birth of the great astronomer. It was officially opened on 19 February in Toruń. The following events will be held in Kraków (24-26 May), Olsztyn (21-24 June) and again in Toruń. The Kraków part of the Congress will be divided into two parts: philosophical 'The Copernican Heritage' and economic 'On Money'.

During the Congress, attendees will be able to take part in interesting lectures and debates delivered and presided over by renowned Polish and foreign experts in the field of philosophy (including Rev. Prof. Michał Heller, Prof. Stefano Gulizia, and Prof. Ovanes Akopyan) and economics (such as Prof. Marek Belka, Prof. Waltraud Schelkle, Prof. Sebastian Edwards).

The World Copernican Congress will be an important occasion for the international academic community to celebrate Copernicus and his heritage and address key issues in modern science.

The philosophical section of the Congress, entitled ‘The Copernican Heritage’, will be separated into three sections:

  1. Copernicus’ Influence: on the evolution of worldviews: a panel discussing Copernicus’ influence both on scientific and everyday perspectives on the world as well as the dynamics of changes in these perspectives. The panel will feature philosophers, historians, anthropologists, theologians and literary scholars.
  2. Revolutions in Science: a panel devoted to the nature of the Copernican Revolution in science and, more generally, all great scientific revolutions. The panel will be attended by philosophers, science scholars, science historians and psychologists.
  3. The Anthropic Principle: a panel on the anthropic principle, first formulated during the 1973 Copernican Congress. The panel is directed to philosophers, cosmologists and mathematicians.

Full programme of the Congress is availabe on its official website.

All events will be livestreamed on the Jagiellonian University YouTube channel.
