Exhibition: ‘Machinae Calculatoriae – Calculating Machines’

Exhibition: ‘Machinae Calculatoriae – Calculating Machines’

The aim of the exhibition is to present to a larger audience a number of devices that historically have been used to facilitate arithmetic calculations. The official opening will take place on 2 September at 4.00 p.m. The exhibition will be available to visitor during the standard working hours of the Museum. Admission is free.

The exhibition is built around several types of calculating devices: abaci, Napier’s bones and its derivatives, slide rules, simple mechanical adders, and more complex mechanical arithmometers, including some of the oldest ones that have been preserved to this day. The exhibition will also feature other objects depicting calculating devices, such as prints, drawings, and paintings. Interactive replicas of the devices will allow visitors to gain first-hand experience of using the devices, while information boards will provide details on their evolution.

The exhibition is part of the 100th anniversary of the Polish Mathematical Society, which will take place on 3–7 September 2019 in Kraków.
