On 25 February 2019 the Mexican Center at the Jagiellonian University was officially opened by the Rector of the Jagiellonian University Prof. Wojciech Nowak and the Ambassador of Mexico to Poland Alejandro Negrín Muñoz.
The opening ceremony was preceded by the lecture for the students of the JU Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora, entitled „USA - Ameryka Łacińska: czas próby” (USA - Latin America: the time of trial”), delivered by Dr Ryszard Schnepf.
The meeting was also attended by the Honorary Consul of Mexico to Kraków Sebastian Chwedeczko and the JU Rector’s Proxy for Interationalisation Prof. Adam Jelonek. The topics discussed at the meeting included the ongoing cooperation between the Jagiellonian University and Mexican higher education institutions, the history of Polish-Mexican relations, and the current political situation in Central America.
The Mexican Center is an auxiliary unit of the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora at the JU Faculty of International and Political Studies. It aims to coordinate the cooperation of the Institute with universities and research institutions from Mexico. The specific goals include promoting the offer of partner Mexican universities, coordinating initiatives undertaken in cooperation with the diplomatic mission of Mexico to Poland, coordinating the collaboration with the National Autonomous University of Mexico in accordance with the August 2018 agreement, and cooperating with the International Relations Office in organizing stays of visiting professors from Mexico at the JU.
