During the 10th World Biomaterials Congress, organised on between 18th and 22nd May 2016, JU researchers have been awarded for their work on an antidote for heparin microparticles.
The award was received by Bartłomiej Kałaska from the Department of Pharmacodynamics of the Medical University of Białystok. The antidote is the result of a joint research effort made by scientists:
from the JU Faculty of Chemistry:
- Dr hab. Krzysztof Szczubiałka, prof. UJ,
- Prof. dr hab. Maria Nowakowska,
- Dr Kamil Kamiński;
and from the Medical University of Białystok:
- Dr hab. Andrzej Mogielnicki,
- Prof. dr hab. Dariusz Pawlak,
- Emilia Sokołowska.
The results of the research show that the HBC polymer (Heparin Binding Copolymer) created by the scientists may potentially be used as an antidote for unfractionated heparin and microparticle heparin. HBC possesses three unique properties which give it a considerable advantage over commonly used protamine.
