JU researcher awarded in a prestigious competition by the Royal Society of Edinburgh

The Royal Society of Edinburgh, the most prestigious Scottish scientific society bringing together representatives of science, culture and art, has announced a list of projects that will receive its funding in 2024. One of the awards will go to Prof. Grażyna Ewa Ptak from the JU Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology, who, together with Dr. Chih-Jen Lin from the University of Edinburgh, received a grant as part of the RSE International Joint Projects competition.

Scientists have confirmed the existence of a pair of black holes at the centre of the OJ 287 galaxy

An international team of researchers featuring scientists from the JU Astronomical Observatory has confirmed the presence of two supermassive black holes in the centre of the OJ 287 galaxy. Their existence was first suggested in 1982 by astronomers from the University of Turku in Finland. Now the first clear observations of the smaller of the two black holes have been made.

Prof. Shahrokh Shariat, a surgeon and specialist in the area of urology renowned in both Europe and the world, has received the gold Plus ratio quam vis medal, the highest honour bestowed by the oldest Polish university. The award was presented to him on 27 June in the Collegium Novum Assembly Hall.

JU researcher develops a novel galvanisation method

A new method of electrolytic coating of materials a thin layer of a substance has been developed at the Jagiellonian University. The innovation can be implemented on an industrial scale. What is important is that using it requires only a minimal amount of chemical materials and, additionally, its properties may contribute to a faster development of 3rd generation solar cells. The method can be used to cover different types of materials with layers that are only a few nanometres thick.
