Dr Tomasz Kołodziej published in Nature

The journal Nature has published the results of a research project investigating the resonant X-ray excitation of the scandium-45 isomer together with a precise determination of the resonance energy. The project, carried out by an international team of scientists led by Yuri Shvyd’ko from the Argonne National Laboratory (Illinois, USA), also features Dr Tomasz Kołodziej from the JU National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS.

The results of the experiment confirm that in order to further develop ultraprecise research methods, it is necessary to carry out studies using X-ray lasers.

Dr Tomasz Kołodziej is a supervisor of the research infrastructure of the POLYX and SOLCRYS beamlines. The paper he contributed to helped strengthen international cooperation between research centres from the United States and Europe, including the JU synchrotron. Polish researchers gained new experience in the field of accelerator physics, sophisticated X-ray optics and methods of detecting characteristic radiation in the XRF method.

The cooperation will be continued: researchers aim to precisely determine the spectral width of the transition. Additionally, Dr Tomasz Kołodziej will continue his research using specialized  X-ray optical elements during his postdoc internship at the Argonne National Laboratory under the supervision of Yuri Shvyd’ko.

Full paper can be accessed on Nature’s website.
