The Foundation for Polish Science announced the winners of the fourth edition of the Homing programme. A total of 8.8 million PLN (about 2.1 million EUR) will be given to young researchers conducting projects in R&D. Among them is Dr Paweł Ferdek from the JU Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology, who has recently returned from the University of Cardiff.

On 9 March, the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the Jagiellonian University was conferred upon Prof. Joseph Schatzker. The awarded researcher, who is of Polish descent, is a world-famous orthopaedist and traumatologist. Thanks to his various activities, he has been recognised by the Polish orthopaedic environment as both a disseminator of knowledge and the catalyst for further successful endeavours in this branch of medicine.

JU Faculty of Law and Administration to open a new study programme on intellectual property and new technologies

On 7 March, a letter of intent was signed between the Jagiellonian University, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland. The letter is the first step in establishing formal cooperation on opening a the new Intellectual Property and New Technologies Master’s study programme at the JU Faculty of Law and Administration.

Urologists from the University Children’s Hospital will use laser to remove urinary calculi

The University Children’s Hospital in Kraków received a holmium laser device to treat urological disorders, such as kidney stone disease (urolithiasis). It was fist used on 1 March 2018, when Prof. Rafał Chrzan, head of the urology department, removed stones from the urinary bladder of a six-year-old boy.
