First stage of modernisation of Children’s Hospital completed

First stage of modernisation of Children’s Hospital completed

The first stage of modernisation of University Children’s Hospital has been completed. A governmental grant was used to renovate hospital wards with about 300 beds, a kitchen, pharmacy, as well as teaching and maintenance facilities. Besides, a new emergency department with a helipad was built. This phase of modernisation officially concluded on 23 January 2017 with the opening of the round-shaped building A.

Building A is one of the oldest parts of the hospital. It was built in 1965. On Monday, it was re-opened after the renovation, which took over a year to be completed.

Patients from five wards (cardiology, gastroenterology, rheumatology and environmental diseases, oncology and hematology, as well as clinical nutrition) are soon to be moved to the newly renovated building, which will altogether include nearly 200 hospital beds. The extension of the building resulted in increasing the floor area by over 1000 square metres, which will be used for doctor’s rooms, offices, education rooms playrooms for children, as well as social rooms for their parents.

The main principle of the modernisation was to upgrade the building to modern standards and create better conditions of accommodation and treatment of young patients. The total cost of the first stage of the project, which involved five hospital buildings, amounted to 140 million zlotys. The total value of the grant is 201 million zlotys. The remaining funds will be used to renovate the rehabilitation buildings.

As a result of the fist stage of modernisation the hospital gained:

  • a new emergency department in building C, along with a helipad,
  • state-of-the-art gastronomic equipment and devices that keep meals transported to the wards hot,
  • one of the most advanced hospital pharmacies in Poland, in which personalized medications are prepared for patients 24 hours a day,
  • a state-of-the-art transformer station, which meets the power demands of a modern hospital,
  • a number of new or renovated premises for hospital wards, as well as teaching and administrative rooms.
