State-of-the-art medical equipment for the Clinical Department of Otolaryngology

State-of-the-art medical equipment for the Clinical Department of Otolaryngology

The University Hospital in Kraków obtained state-of-the-art equipment, including a modern fiberscope, for the Clinical Department of Otolaryngology, the only hospital unit in Małopolska province to currently possess such a device. The purchase was funded by the EU programme supporting prevention of head and neck cancer.

The fiberscope is designed to inspect the patency of nose, nasopharynx, lower pharynx, and laryngean vestibule, also during the drug-induced sleep. This is especially helpful in diagnosing cancer, in which case the traditional inspection with a mirror is very prone to errors. What is important, the examination is painless, non-invasive and does not interrupt tissue continuity.

“Examination with fiberscope is very useful in the diagnosis of epithelial cancer as well as laryngeal and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, because of their location. Its main advantage is the increase in accuracy of the initial recommendation for surgery, and the shortening of the operation itself. This ensures that a patient with a suspected cancer receives a quick diagnosis”, explains Prof. Paweł Stręk, Deputy Head of the Clinical Department of Otolaryngology at the University Hospital.

Additionally, the department received a modern medical examination table with armrests and a regulated headrest. It is also fitted with a comfortable bedsore-preventing mattress.
