Fulbright scholarships for JU researchers

Fulbright scholarships for JU researchers

The Polish-US Fulbright Commission has accepted the nominations for Fulbright scholarships for the academic year 2018/2019. Among them there are students, PhD candidates, and academic staff of the Jagiellonian University, who will receive funding for their graduate programmes, individual research projects, or teaching and research projects at American higher education institutions.

The scholarship applicants were required to have an excellent command of English. To secure funding for their projects, they had to convince the Commission that studying or working in the USA will provide them with the experience necessary to continue their research projects in Poland and make use of the advanced technologies available in US laboratories.

Fulbright Graduate Student Awards are granted through a competition that is open to graduates from higher education institutions who intend to enrol in a Master’s programme, PhD programme, or other study programme that awards a graduate diploma at a US higher education institution (except for medical studies requiring direct contact with patients, LLM, and MBA programs). Ewelina Marcinkiewicz, a Computer Science student at the JU Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science, received a scholarship in this category.

Fulbright Junior Research Awards are granted through a competition open to doctoral students preparing their PhD at higher education institutions, research institutes, Polish Academy of Science units, international scientific institutes and other scientific units in Poland, in all fields, except for projects which require direct contact with patients. This year, the awards were granted to Magdalena Mijas from the JU MC Faculty of Health Sciences and Michał Koza from the JU Faculty of Polish Studies. They will be able to collect materials for their doctoral thesis and find interesting books and publications in US libraries.

Fulbright Senior Award is a scholarship for researchers and teachers (who work at universities, research institutes, scientific units of the Polish Academy of Sciences, international scientific institutes and other scientific units in Poland) for the implementation of their own research projects at American universities, non-profit research institutes and some government institutions. Scholarship holders, in addition to the implementation of the research project, can also teach courses. Among the researchers awarded in this year’s edition, there are three members of the JU academic staff: Dr Jakub Filonik (JU Faculty of Philology), Dr Urszulak Marcinkowska-Trimboli (JU MC Faculty of Health Sciences), and Dr Zbigniew Siudak (JU MC Faculty of Medicine).

The Fulbright Program in Poland was established in 1959, with the first grantee traveling from Poland to the United States in that same year. The Program was jointly administered by the U.S. Embassy and the Ministry of Education. After over 70 years, the Fulbright Program operates in over 160 countries worldwide, having operated in more than 180 throughout its lifespan. It is still the largest and most prestigious educational exchange programmes in the world. More than 370,000 ‘Fulbrighters’ have participated in the programme since its inception. Today, the Fulbright Program awards approximately 8,000 grants annually. Its alumni include 33 current or former heads of state or government, 54 Nobel Laureates, 82 Pulitzer Prize winners, 29 MacArthur Foundation Fellows, 16 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients, and thousands of leaders across the private, public, and non-profit sectors. Since its establishment almost 58 years ago, the programme has had more than 4,000 participants, continuously adding to that tally by awarding approximately 100 grants each year.
