On 28 March 2018 the Jagiellonian University hosted a visit by Dr Enrique Graue Wiechers, the Rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) - the oldest North American university and the largest higher education institution in Latin America.

During his visit to Kraków, Dr Enrique Graue Wiechers was accompanied by his wife Mercedes Hernández. The delegation also included the Cultural Attaché of the Embassy of Mexico to Poland Irwin Genaro Salazar Vega.

In Collegium Novum the Mexican delegation was received with the Rector of the Jagiellonian University Prof. Wojciech Nowak. The meeting was also attended by the JU Vice-Rector for Research and Structural Funds Prof. Stanisław Kistryn, the JU Rector’s Proxy for Internationalisation Prof. Adam Jelonek, and the Head of the JU Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora Prof. Radosław Rybkowski. The conversation mainly focused on cooperation between the Jagiellonian University and the UNAM, with special emphasis on student and academic staff exchange within the framework of the formal agreement which was signed last October.

After the meeting, the participants took part in the official opening of the UNAM cultural corner in the Jagiellonian Library, where they were welcomed by the library’s Director Prof. Zdzisław Pietrzyk. The cultural corner includes three computers with software enabling access to the digital collection of the UNAM library, comprising literary documents, research papers, video files, radio broadcasts, and podcasts. During their visit to the library, the delegation also took a short tour of the musical manuscripts exhibition “Beethoven and Great Anniversaries”.

The official part of the visit concluded with attending the exhibition Boturini Codex. The Strip Showing the Travels”, currently hosted by the Jagiellonian University, presenting a unique medieval Aztec historical document. Drawn on strips of fig bark paper, it tells about the travels of Mexico people through Central Mexico and the most important events in their history.
