SOLARIS synchrotron featured in BBC Arabic programme

SOLARIS synchrotron featured in BBC Arabic programme

The BBC television news channel broadcast to the Arab World aired a report about SOLARIS – the synchrotron radiation research centre run under the auspices of the Jagiellonian University.

The story is part of 4Tech series – the BBC Arabic’s weekly programme devoted to research, technology, cyberspace and innovation. It featured Prof. Marek Stankiewicz, Director of the National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS, who explained the BBC reporter how the synchrotron functions and how it can be applied in various fields of research, allowing scientists to look into the depths of matter itself, and carry out precise analyses. Thanks to synchrotrons it is possible to study not only the composition of a given substance, but also its structure, as the light of the synchrotron can penetrate into the studied material.

Synchrotrons open up completely new research possibilities. They enable researchers to carry out analyses which were previously impossible as well as obtain better results than those from studies carried out using traditional methods. Synchrotron beamlines are currently the most versatile research tools available in the natural and technical sciences, such as biology, chemistry, physics, materials engineering, nanotechnology, medicine, pharmacology, geology, or crystallography.

The 4Tech programme is watched by millions of viewers, mainly from the Middle East and North Africa. The report, available below, is part of a mini-series presenting research conducted at the Jagiellonian University.
