FAIR – challenges and opportunities for Polish physicists

FAIR – challenges and opportunities for Polish physicists

On 18–19 September, the JU Institute of Physics hosted a conference directed to Polish physics students and young scientists interested in broadening their career and research opportunities. The conference was opened by JU Vice-Rector for Research and Structural Funds Prof. Stanisław Kistryn.

The aim of the meeting was to familiarise its participants with the Facility for Anti Proton and Ion Research (FAIR), a research centre currently under construction in Darmstadt, Germany.

The participation of Polish researchers in the project is based on an international agreement signed by the Polish government. Poland’s share in the project is set at 2.38% of the total cost, which translates to roughly 30 million euro. At least 50% of that will be delivered in the form of equipment and devices. The Polish Minister of Science and Higher Education made the Jagiellonian University responsible for the realisation of the agreement.

During the conference, established scientists talked about the prospects of working at FAIR to students and young researchers. The latter also had the opportunity to present their own study projects.
