European Alliance for Asian Studies meeting at the Jagiellonian University

European Alliance for Asian Studies meeting at the Jagiellonian University

On May 30-31, 2019, the annual European Alliance for Asian Studies (EAAS) meeting was held at the Jagiellonian University. This year the meeting was hosted by the Institute of Middle and Far East of the Jagiellonian University (IBiDW), a member of EAAS since 2018. During the two-day debates, international cooperation and future research projects were discussed.

The European Alliance for Asian Studies is an association of 18 major European research and development institutions dealing with Asia and the Orient (including IIAS Leiden, NIAS Copenhagen, SOAS London, GIS France, and GIGA Hamburg). Its goal is to support academic and research cooperation within Europe, as well as build international research networks and work towards internationalisation and dissemination of research results and expert opinions.

This year’s meeting was attended by researchers from 12 countries, representing 13 centers working on Asia. The discussions took place in the Senate Room of the Jagiellonian University on the first day, and in the new IBIDW headquarters at ul. Oleandry 2a on the second day. The discussed topics encompassed not only the issues of international cooperation, but also the need for increasing the visibility and recognition of EAAS (including the Institute of the Middle and Far East, and thus the Jagiellonian University) in the field of research on Asia and the Orient.
