The purpose of the unit is to provide patients with quick and complex diagnostics as well as multidirectional, integrated treatment of breast diseases.
As many as 17 thousand Polish women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. 5 thousand of them die. It is the most common malignant tumor among women in developed countries and the second most frequent cause of death from cancer among Polish women (after lung cancer). The incidence rate is expected to rise in the years to follow.
On 7 May 2015 the Breast Unit was opened at the Department of General, Oncological and Gastroenterological Surgery of the University Hospital in Kraków. Modeled after American and West European healthcare institutions, it is aimed at providing female patients with quick and complex diagnostics as well as multidirectional, integrated treatment. Each time breast cancer is diagnosed, the decision regarding treatment is made by a group of doctors, including radiologists, surgeons, gynecologists, oncologists, radiotherapists, and a plastic surgeon. In addition, all the patients have access to psychological and physiotherapeutic care.
The newly opened Breast Unit of the University Hospital in Kraków is located in the recently renovated premises of the Department of General, Oncological and Gastroenterological Surgery at ul. Kopernika 40.
