Silver Plus ratio quam vis medal for Prof. John D. Simon

On 13 June, the JU Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology held a ceremony of conferment of a silver Plus ratio quam vis medal upon Prof. John D. Simon, distinguished chemist and Rector of Lehigh University (Pennsylvania, USA). The researcher was awarded for his contribution to the development of collaboration between Duke University (Durham, North Carolina) and the Jagiellonian University in the area of molecular biology, photochemistry and photophysics. On behalf of the JU Rector, the diploma and medal were presented by the JU Vice-Rector for Research and Structural Funds Prof. Stanisław Kistryn.

JU hosts a meeting of a prestigious university network

On June 5 the Jagiellonian University began hosting a three-day long summit of the Coimbra Group, an association of the oldest and most prestigious European higher education institutions. The participants include presidents and other representatives of 39 universities, who will meet within the framework of the Coimbra Group General Assembly and Annual Conference, accompanied by meetings of the network’s Executive Board and working groups.

Scientists produced 'Armoured Enzyme' Crystals

A team of scientists from the Jagiellonian University and Aalto University in Helsinki have succeeded in placing enzymes into protective protein cages which were then assembled into crystals. The enzymes still function, but are shielded from harsh environmental conditions by the cages. The pioneering research was conducted at the JU Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology.
