Glossary

A glossary of some key terms used on the English website of the Jagiellonian University.

  • 1st Campus: The oldest, historical part of the Jagiellonian University, located in Kraków's Old Town. Also known as the academic quarter. Cf. Collegium Novum, Collegium Maius, Collegium Witkowski.
  • 2nd Campus: This term refers to university buildings erected in the 20th century near the Jagiellonian Library. Cf. Auditorium Maximum, Collegium Paderevianum, Jagiellonian Library.
  • 3rd Campus: The Jagiellonian University's most modern part, the Campus of the 600th Anniversary of the Jagiellonian University Revival, located on the outskirts of Kraków. Cf. Małopolska Biotechnology Centre, Jagiellonian Center for Innovation, Life Science Park.
  • Academic procession: An annual event, during which university professors dressed in gowns pass through the streets of Kraków from Wawel Cathedral to Auditorium Maximum in celebration of a new academic year. Cf. Auditorium Maximum.
  • Student Society: An association of students interested in a particular academic field or discipline.
  • Academic year: As in most higher education institutions in Poland, the academic year at the Jagiellonian University begins on 1 October and ends on 30 September of the next year. It is composed of two semesters. Cf. semester.
  • Auditorium Maximum: Located at ul. Krupnicza 33, near Collegium Paderevianum and the Jagiellonian Library, this building houses a complex of lecture halls, the largest of which can hold 1,200 people.
  • Aula: An assembly hall used for lectures and ceremonies.
  • Bursar: The chief financial officer of the Jagiellonian University.
  • Chancellor: The chief administrative officer of the Jagiellonian University.
  • Collegium Maius: Located at ul. Jagiellońska 15, it is the oldest university building in Poland. Currently it is the home of the university museum.
  • Collegium Novum: The main Jagiellonian University building, located at ul. Gołębia 24.
  • Dean: The head of a faculty. Cf. faculty.
  • Degree: An academic degree is a title received upon completion of a certain stage of education or academic career. There are five main degrees in Poland: licencjat -> magister -> doktor -> doktor habilitowany -> profesor. Profesor is often referred to as an academic title, instead of a degree. The holders of degrees lower than doctor are simply referred to as Mr/Ms in English texts. Cf. Lic., Mgr, Dr, Dr hab., Prof.
  • Doctor honoris causa: The most respectable title bestowed upon eminent scholars by the Jagiellonian University for their outstanding achievements.
  • Doctoral programme: see: third cycle programme
  • Dr: Shortened form of doktor. Closest English equivalent: PhD. Cf. degree, Lic., Mgr, Dr hab., Prof.
  • Dr hab.: Shortened form of doktor habilitowany, signifying a holder of a higher doctorate. Closest English equivalent: Associate Professor. Cf. degree, Lic., Mgr, Dr, Prof.
  • ECTS: Short for European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, which enables students from various countries to attain credits and facilitates academic degree qualification.
  • Examination period: There are two examination periods at the Jagiellonian University: 29 January-10 February and 16 June-29 June in academic year 2014/2015. Should a student be unable to pass an examination during a regular examination period, a repeat examination period is offered for each semester: 17 February-23 February and 1 September-15 September in academic year 2014/2015. The exact dates vary from year to year.
  • Faculty: A division within the university comprising units concerned with a particular academic field (or a number of fields). Cf. institute.
  • First cycle programme (or undergraduate programme): A study programme which lasts 3 years and is a prerequisite for further education. Upon completion, the student is granted the title of licencjat. Cf. second cycle programme, third cycle programme, long cycle programme, Lic.
  • Gown: An academic dress worn by university staff on formal occasions and ceremonies. Cf. academic procession.
  • Graduate programme: see: second cycle programme
  • Honorary professor: An honorary title bestowed upon distinguished scholars of the Jagiellonian University.
  • Institute: A subdivision of a faculty, devoted to a more specialised area of study. Cf. faculty.
  • Inż.: Shortened form of inżynier, commonly used in conjunction with Mgr or Dr. Signifies a degree in engineering. Cf. Lic., Mgr, Dr, Prof.
  • Jagiellonian Center of Innovation: an institution linked to the Jagiellonian University which invests in new technologies and fosters collaboration between the university and industry. Cf. Life Science Park, 3rd Campus.
  • Jagiellonian Library: The library of the Jagiellonian University and one of the largest in Poland. Contains over 6.7 million volumes, including a collection of unique medieval manuscripts.
  • Lecture: An academic class during which the lecturer speaks and the students listen. Attending most lectures at the Jagiellonian University is not obligatory, though it is highly recommended as the knowledge they offer is often required to pass exams. Cf. lecturer, examination session.
  • Lecturer: 1) A person who delivers a lecture. Cf. lecture. 2) A teaching position in Polish higher education.
  • Lic.: Shortened form of licencjat. Closest English equivalent: BA. Cf. degree, Mgr, Dr, Dr hab., Prof.
  • Life Science Park: Jagiellonian Life Science and Technology Park is a complex of labs located on the 3rd Campus. It is a project started by the Jagiellonian Center for Innovation to promote research on life sciences. Cf. Jagiellonian Center for Innvoation, 3rd Campus.
  • Long-cycle programme: A study programme which is a combination of first and second cycle programmes. It typically takes 5 years. Upon completion, the student is granted the title of magister. Cf. first cycle programme, second cycle programme, third cycle programme, Mgr.
  • Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology: The Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology (MCB) is a joint project of the Jagiellonian University and the University of Agriculture to establish a common research centre whose task is to carry out research on various functions of living organisms. Cf. 3rd Campus.
  • Matriculation: The formal process of entering the university.
  • Medical College: Also known as Collegium Medicum, it is composed of three faculties: Medicine, Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Cf. faculty.
  • Mgr: Shortened form of magister. Closest English equivalent: MA. Cf. degree, Dr, Dr hab., Prof.
  • Office hours: The time outside of class offered to students by academic staff members for discussion.
  • Postgradute programme: A study programme available to graduates of first, second and long cycle programmes. Cf. first cycle programme, second cycle programme, long cycle programme.
  • Prof.: Shortened form of profesor, the highest academic title in Poland. Cf. degree, Lic., Mgr, Dr, Dr hab.
  • Prof. UJ: The title of a holder of a higher doctorate (doktor habilitowany; Dr hab.) who is employed at the university in the position of a professor. Cf. degree, Dr hab., Prof.
  • Rector: The highest academic official of the Jagiellonian University.
  • Scholarship: An award or financial aid granted to students on various grounds to help further their education.
  • Second cycle programme (or graduate programme): A study programme which is available to graduates of the first cycle programme; it lasts 2 years, and most frequently offers specialisation in a narrower academic field than the first cycle programme. Upon completion, the student is granted the title of magister. Cf. first cycle programme, third cycle programme, long cycle programme, Mgr.
  • Semester: The academic year at the Jagiellonian University is divided into two terms: the winter semester and the summer semester. Cf. academic year.
  • Senate: The governing body of the Jagiellonian University, comprising the Rector, Vice-Rectors, Deans and other university representatives. Cf. Rector, Vice-Rector, Dean.
  • Specialisation: An area of study which a student specialises in by conducting an in-depth research. Cf. second cycle programme, long cycle programme.
  • Student Government: A student body dedicated to organisational activities, representation and support of students at the Jagiellonian University.
  • Thesis: A comprehensive research paper required to complete most study programmes at Polish universities.
  • Third cycle programme (or doctoral programme): A study programme which is available to graduates of a second cycle programme, typically lasts 4 years and allows students to pursue academic career in a desired field. Upon completion, the student is granted the title of doctor. Cf. first cycle programme, second cycle programme, long cycle programme, Dr.
  • Undergraduate programme: see: first cycle programme
  • USOS: University Study-Oriented System - an online tool for monitoring and managing studies used at the Jagiellonian University.
  • Vice-Rector: The second highest academic official at the Jagiellonian University. Currently, there are five Vice-Rectors at the Jagiellonian University: Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs, Vice-Rector for Medical College, Vice-Rector for Human Resources and Financial Management, Vice-Rector for University Development and Vice-Rector for Research and Structural Funds. They are authorised to act on the Rector's behalf in their respective areas of competence.
