JU synchrotron begins installation of a cutting-edge device

JU synchrotron begins installation of a cutting-edge device

The installation of the second cryo-electron microscope for industry is currently in progress at the JU National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS. The new device will complement the SOLARIS offer, as it will dedicated primarily to the industrial sector and for screening samples before studying them at the already existing Krios™ G3i cryo-electron microscope.

Cryo-electron microscopy is becoming one of the most important techniques used in structural biology. It allows for determining the structure of proteins and other biomolecules without the need of crystallisation as well as understanding cellular mechanisms behind human diseases. It also facilitates the process of designing new drugs and optimisation of existing ones. This method is also successfully being applied in nanotechnology and other fields.

After the installation, Glacios™ has to pass the Site Acceptance Test. The endeavour is co-funded by the EU's Smart Growth Operational Programme (Measure 4.2 ‘Development of modern research infrastructure of the science sector’).
