Prof. Anetta Undas from the JU MC Faculty of Medicine has become a member of Academia Europaea, a prestigious organisation bringing together more than 5,000 researchers from various disciplines. Prof. Undas is the fifth representative of the Jagiellonian University academic community to be invited into the organisation.
Academia Europaea was established in 1988 and is the Pan-European Academy of Sciences Humanities and Letters. Its objective is the advancement and propagation of excellence in scholarship in the humanities, law, the economic, social, and political sciences, mathematics, medicine, and all branches of natural and technological sciences anywhere in the world for the public benefit and for the advancement of the education of the public of all ages in the aforesaid subjects in Europe. Academia Europaea is a European, non-governmental association acting as an Academy. Its members are scientists and scholars who collectively aim to promote learning, education and research. It brings together more than 5,000 members which includes leading experts from the physical sciences and technology, biological sciences and medicine, mathematics, the letters and humanities, social and cognitive sciences, economics and the law.
More than one hundred Poles can be counted amongst the members of Academia Europaea, including several from the Jagiellonian University: Prof. Stanisław Biernat (Faculty of Law and Administration), Prof. Józef Dulak (Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology, Prof. Wojciech Czakon (Faculty of Management and Social Communication) and Prof. Marek Sanak (Faculty of Medicine).
Prof. Anetta Undas graduated from the JU Faculty of Medicine. She is a specialist in internal medicine, in particular in the treatment of patients with thromboembolic disorders. She is head of the Department of Experimental Cardiac Surgery, Anesthesiology and Cardiology at the JU MC Institute of Cardiology and the Evidence Based Medicine Unit at the JU MC II Chair in Internal Medicine. She also runs the Centre for Innovative Laboratory Diagnostics at John Paul II Hospital in Kraków. She works together with numerous European and American research centres.
Her research interests include genetic and environmental regulation of blood coagulation and atherosclerosis linking basic and clinical science. She identified a new risk factor for arterial and venous thromboembolic events, i.e. prothrombotic fibrin clot properties, and has established a specialist centre for fibrin research. She is also interested in studying the effect of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases as well as various medications, including cholesterol-lowering agents, anticoagulants and antiaggregatory drugs. She has written more than 350 peer-reviewed papers indexed in the Medline database, including the first author papers in prestigious journals such as The Lancet, Circulation, Blood, Stroke, J Biol Chem.
