JU archaeologists discover a unique Mayan bath

A unique steam bath carved in rock was discovered by Jagiellonian University researchers conducting excavations in the ancient Mayan city of Nakum in Guatemala. The more than 2,500-year-old structure could have also been the site of religious rituals.

We intuitively know that sleep is important for our health and wellbeing. Probably all of us have experienced the negative consequences of its shortage, such as impaired concentration, slower reaction times or inability to engage in more strenuous activities. It’s estimated that over a quarter of Poles suffer from a chronic shortage of sleep. It has also turned out that sleep deficiency has a negative impact on the periods of rest.

JU researchers to study structural similarities between Poland and Portugal

Scientists from the Jagiellonian University and the University of Lisbon will investigate the cases of Poland and Portugal in order to find similarities and differences between the two countries in four crucial contemporary political and social issues: European Union citizenship, migration, populism, and LGBT rights. It will be possible thanks to a grant by the National Agency for Academic Exchange.

JU synchrotron will have a new beamline

On 18 December 2018 a trilateral agreement was signed between the SOLARIS National Synchrotron Radiation Centre, the University of Applied Sciences Hochschule Niederrhein, Germany, and the Synchrotron Light Research Institute in Thailand. The goal of the consortium established by the agreement is to design and produce components and software for a new beamline and its research end-station.

Prof. Tadeusz Bujnicki, the founder of the Chair in Literary Culture of Eastern Borderlands at the JU Faculty of Polish Studies was awarded with the 2018 Algis Kalėda Prize by the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore in Vilnius. The retired Jagiellonian University Professor was recognised for his recent publication Apie literatūrinę 'Žagarų' fgrupę ir ne tik (On Żagary literary group and beyond) and other academic achievements.

JU students will help people suffering from depression

Therapify is a mobile application designed to help depressed people. It was first conceived by Łukasz Pstrong, a graduate of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, and developed over the course of the last two years with collaborators from his university, the Jagiellonian University, and SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw.

The Polish Academy of Science Biotechnology Committee has awarded Dr Katarzyna Magiera-Mularz from the Jagiellonian University with Professor Wacław Szybalski Prize for the best original research paper written by a young researcher published in a scientific journal.
