Immunity: the safety net of our organism

White blood cells, also called leukocytes, aid our organisms in various ways. For our bodies to work correctly, we need to be protected from infections, and white blood cells play an important role in keeping us safe. But what exactly is immunity? How does it work and why is it so important? We asked Prof. Joanna Cichy from the Department of Immunology of the JU Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology to explain the intricacies of these issues to us.

The third edition of the Jagiellonian University International Model United Nations was successfully completed on the 25th November 2018. The annual 3-day conference is a simulation of a scientific conference and a role-playing game, during which the participants replicate the working groups of the United Nations Organisation, as well as acquire leadership, language, public speaking and diplomatic skills.

What do we know about free will? Prof. John-Dylan Haynes in 'Big Questions in Kraków'

On 22 November, an open lecture by Prof. John-Dylan Haynes entitled ‘Free Will and Mind Reading’ was held at the JU Faculty of Law and Administration. Prof. Haynes is a distinguished brain researcher and the current director of the Berlin Center for Advanced Neuroimaging. The lecture is part of a series of meetings known as ‘Big Questions in Kraków’, co-organised by the Copernicus Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies, the Jagiellonian University and the City of Kraków.

Climate changes affect insect reproduction, says JU scientist

A research team featuring Dr hab. Łukasz Michalczyk from the JU Faculty of Biology is investigating the impact of temperature on insects on the case of red flour beetle, a small worldwide pest of stored products, particularly food grains and their derivatives. The unsettling results of their research were published last week in Nature Communications.
