The latest work of scientists from the Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology (MCB) of the Jagiellonian University describes the first high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structures of human Elongator and its mechanism of action. The study was published recently in Nature Communications.
‘Today, we remember 12 May 1364, when King Casimir the Great made the decision to found the Studium Generale in Kraków. The King knew full well that the future of the Polish state must be based on educated people’, said JU Rector Prof. Jacek Popiel in his opening remarks on the Jagiellonian University Day. Prof. Adam Strzembosz, a renowned lawyer and distinguished public figure, was a guest of honour during these celebrations, during which he received the gold Plus Ratio Quam Vis medal.
The Jagiellonian University was ranked highest amongst Polish higher education institutions in the Center for World University Rankings 2024 (CWUR). It is closely followed by the University of Warsaw and AGH University of Science and Technology. As usual, Harvard University is at the top of the list.
The Rector-Elect of the Jagiellonian University Prof. Piotr Jedynak will assume office on 1 September 2024. On May 8, the names of six Vice-Rectors with whom he will cooperate during the 2024-2028 term-in-office were officially announced. The candidates proposed by Prof. Jedynak were approved by the Jagiellonian University Electoral College consisting of 238 representatives of the whole academic community.
Prof. Wojciech Bałus, head of the JU Department of Art Theory and Cultural Property Protection and the Centre for Stained Glass Studies, became a member of Academia Europaea. The researcher is the sixth member of the JU academic community to join this prestigious organisation, which brings together over 5,5 thousand scholars from all over the world.
In late April, the second stage of the international Pax Moot Court competition took place in Ljubljana. The team of the JU Faculty of Law and Administration, consisting of Daria Rożniakowska, Aleksandra Czuk, Weronika Głownia and Anna Szafarz, advanced to the semi-finals. Additionally, Daria Rożniakowska took second place in the best speaker category.
Dr hab. Marcin Grabowski from the JU Faculty of International and Political Studies was chosen as the Vice-President of the Global International Relations Section (GIRS) of the International Studies Association (ISA). Additionally, he will also take on the duties of the GRIS Section Programme Co-Chair during the coming ISA conventions in Chicago and Columbus.
The current Vice-Rector for Human Resources and Financial Management, Prof. Piotr Jedynak, was chosen by the electoral college to become the new Rector of the Jagiellonian University for the 2024–2028 term from a total of four candidates. The Rector-Elect will take office on 1 September 2024.
COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is part of the Horizon Europe programme, which allows researchers from different countries to create a cooperation network in order to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and joint development of projects. COST Actions are one of the main ways of carrying out these objectives as well as promoting international collaboration and innovative research projects. The PAAR-net COST Action is an initiative that brings together researchers and innovators interested in participatory approaches with older adults.
The European Commission has announced the results of the international competition Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks as part of the Horizon Europe programme. The goal of the scheme is to promote projects aimed at providing complex training to early stage researchers without a PhD by international interdisciplinary research teams in collaboration with non-academic institutions. Four of the awarded projects will involve Jagiellonian University doctoral students as consortium partners.
We now know the results of one of the most important global higher education institution rankings: QS World University Rankings by Subject. In this year’s edition, the Jagiellonian University was ranked in 23 disciplines in all five research areas. The highest number of points was awarded to Religious Studies, Philosophy, Linguistics, Modern Languages, Geography and History.
