Prof. Armen Edigarian, Prof. Tomasz Grodzicki and Prof. Dorota Malec will be new vice-rectors of the Jagiellonian University. Prof. Jacek Popiel and Prof. Stanisław Kistryn were re-elected for a second term.

Ludwik Gross insisted that some types of cancer can be caused by viruses. He embarked on a life-long quest to discover a virus responsible for leukaemia in mice. Although the entire scientific world was sceptical, he held on to his theory until he was able to prove it.

Prof. Wojciech Nowak re-elected as the Jagiellonian University's rector

Prof. Wojciech Nowak, the incumbent rector of the Jagiellonian University, was re-elected for another term of office (2016-2020). The election took place on Thursday, 7 April 2016. Prof. Nowak received 147 out of 195 votes. The remaining 45 valid votes were cast for his opponent, Prof. Jerzy Szwed from the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science.
