Urologists from the University Children’s Hospital will use laser to remove urinary calculi

The University Children’s Hospital in Kraków received a holmium laser device to treat urological disorders, such as kidney stone disease (urolithiasis). It was fist used on 1 March 2018, when Prof. Rafał Chrzan, head of the urology department, removed stones from the urinary bladder of a six-year-old boy.

The Polish-US Fulbright Commission has accepted the nominations for Fulbright scholarships for the academic year 2018/2019. Among them there are students, PhD candidates, and academic staff of the Jagiellonian University, who will receive funding for their graduate programmes, individual research projects, or teaching and research projects at American higher education institutions.

The annual Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings featuring young researchers from all over the world have been organised since 1951. They provide an excellent opportunity to have an intergenerational discussion on issues troubling contemporary science. This year, two representatives of the Jagiellonian University Medical College – Dr Mateusz Hołda and Adrian Chrobak – will take part in the meeting.

State-of-the-art medical equipment for the Clinical Department of Otolaryngology

The University Hospital in Kraków obtained state-of-the-art equipment, including a modern fiberscope, for the Clinical Department of Otolaryngology, the only hospital unit in Małopolska province to currently possess such a device. The purchase was funded by the EU programme supporting prevention of head and neck cancer.

PLOS Medicine featured an article presenting the results of research conducted by a team led by Dr hab. Marcin Waligóra from the Jagiellonian University Medical College and Prof. Jonathan Kimmelman from McGill University. The paper analyses risk and benefit for phase I clinical trials in pediatric oncology.
